Before you start grilling

A few simple precautions can mean the difference between an amazing cookout and a trip to the emergency room. Just as you wouldn't jump into a basketball game without stretching, don't fire up your grill without these quick checks:

  • Give your grill a once-over. Check gas connections and hoses for any cracks or wear. They've been sitting through the weather all year – they might need some TLC. An easy test is to brush some soapy water on the connections. See bubbles? That's a leak you'll want to get fixed before you grill.
  • Location. Your grill needs space to breathe – at least 10 feet from your house, deck rails, and overhanging tree branches. We know your patio might be cozy, but crowded grilling is dangerous grilling.
  • Keep an extinguisher handy. Keep one nearby and know how to use it. It's better to have one and not need it than the other way around.

While you're cooking

This is where the magic happens, but it's also when accidents can occur:

  • No kids or pets in your “kitchen. ” Kids and pets are naturally curious about what smells so good, but hot grills and small beings don't mix well.
  • Long-handled tools are your friends. Invest in some good, long-handled grilling tools – your eyebrows will thank you.
  • Clean as you go. Those grease traps aren't just suggestions – they're flare-up prevention. A quick clean between uses keeps things running smoothly.

After the last burger

  • Double-check your shut-off. Turn off the gas at both the grill controls and the shutoff valve. It's like double-locking your front door – extra security for peace of mind.
  • Let it cool completely. We know you're eager to clean up, but rushing to cover or store a hot grill is asking for trouble. Let it cool down properly first.
  • Keep cooking surfaces clean. A quick scrub prevents buildup that could cause problems down the road.
