What to Do After Severe Weather
- If you smell natural gas, usually described as a pungent, “rotten egg” odor, leave the area immediately, then call 911 and us at 800-458-4251.
- If your natural gas meter was turned off or your service was interrupted during the storm, call our customer service at 800-664-5463 to have your service restored.
- Do not attempt to turn your natural gas meter back on. Only a licensed service technician may perform this task.
- Before you dig or begin debris cleanup, call 811 to have underground natural gas pipelines and other utility lines located.
- If you are a customer of Oklahoma Natural Gas and your meter has been damaged, please call our emergency number at 800-458-4251.
We recommend that if you are concerned about the condition of piping or appliances within your home, please call a qualified service agent for an inspection.
What to Do Before Severe Weather
- Check around your natural gas meter and remove any objects that could be blown into or against the meter by strong winds or pushed into the meter by heavy rain and flooding.
- Remove any branches or other objects above the meter that could fall onto and damage the meter.
Winter Weather Safety Tips
- The accumulation of snow and ice increases the potential for damage to natural gas meters, regulators and other above-ground pipeline facilities.
- Keep exhaust and combustion air vents of natural gas appliances clear of snow and ice to maintain smooth operation and prevent carbon monoxide from entering homes and other structures.
- Extreme care should be taken when removing ice or snow from such vents. When possible, use a broom instead of a shovel to avoid damage, and never stand or climb on unsafe ground or surfaces to reach vents.
If you smell natural gas or hear a hissing sound:
- Leave the area immediately.
- Do not use electrical equipment.
- Call 911 and Oklahoma Natural Gas at 800-458-4251.
Earthquake Response Protocol
- Oklahoma Natural Gas takes appropriate steps following significant seismic activity. An evaluation is conducted and crews are sent to survey specific areas that may have been affected.
- If your area experiences an earthquake and you smell natural gas or hear a hissing sound, leave immediately and then call 911 and our emergency number at 800-458-4251.
- If your natural gas meter was turned off or your service was interrupted during severe weather, call customer service at 800-664-5463 Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. CT to have your service restored.
- Once your meter is turned off, only an Oklahoma Natural Gas technician may perform this task. DO NOT attempt to restore your own service. Before service can be restored, our technicians must check all visible and accessible natural gas appliances.
- Before you do any digging, call 811 to locate underground natural gas pipelines and other utility lines.
- During cleanup, be aware of your surroundings and be careful around natural gas meters and pipelines. Before you begin cleanup, please identify where your natural gas meter is so that you can avoid damaging it.
