Digging without knowing what’s below can damage underground utilities, leading to outages, costly repairs or injury. From planting a garden to installing a deck, all digging projects require contacting 811 at least 48 hours before digging starts, excluding the date of notification, weekends, and holidays, so operators of underground facilities can mark their lines. It’s free to do and helps protect yourself and your community!
After all underground facilities are marked, remember to practice safe digging techniques in the tolerance zone, a minimum of two feet from either side of the flag or paint marks, by using only hand tools or soft digging.
