Questions We’re Hearing About High Bills

  • Aside from securitization, what makes up my bill?
Our customers’ bills are made up of a few components that determine how much they pay each month. Typically, the largest charge relates to the cost of natural gas. Ultimately, what our customers pay is what we pay for gas – it’s a passthrough cost. We do not set the cost of natural gas or profit from it. The cost of natural gas includes the natural gas itself, along with what we pay to store and transport natural gas from suppliers to your home or business. Also included are the service charge, fees and taxes. You can find more details here.
  • What causes natural gas prices to change?

When there is a higher demand for natural gas, there is typically a higher cost. Supply and demand can fluctuate based on weather, economic conditions, petroleum prices, natural gas production, net imports and storage inventory.

Oklahoma Natural Gas does not set prices, but we actively work with suppliers to find the best prices for our customers through a regulated competitive bidding process. The price we pay is what you pay with no markup.

  • What are natural gas prices forecast to do?
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s short-term outlook, natural gas pricing will increase in 2024. However, pricing is expected to stay lower than 2022.
  • What can I do to better manage my bill?
For more predictability in your monthly natural gas bill, you can enroll in our Average Payment Plan, which is based on a 12-month rolling average of your natural gas bill. This program is a way to reduce seasonal energy expenses by spreading the cost throughout the year. Customers can visit our Billing Options page to learn more and sign up.
